The research essay shares qualities with all of the inquiry projects you’ve written to this point, whether it’s a profile, a proposal, or a personal essay. In fact, the research essay is a natural extension of all of these other essays. I like how Ballenger put this. I’m a little worried about this essay number two because I have no idea what to choose as my topic! Reading this did clear up a lot of questions I had, like where to find my sources, and how to choose the right ones from the wrong ones.
I hope I can find enough solid sources on my topic, because it would be pathetic to choose a topic small that I could only type four pages to. I realize that this process is going to be long, and that I cannot get off topic in my writing. I tend to do that a lot. I’ll be on topic and one sentence would completely throw off half of my research essay. I look what I did in past research topics and most of them have been on things that I was never really interested in, and I believe that effected the quality of my paper. It is totally true that you have to into the subject you’re researching, because you are constantly discovering more. Thinking about it makes me just wonder what topic I’m going to choose.
I thought it was funny how Ballenger’s daughter had written a research paper at the age of 9. I’ve probably written four of them over the years, but they were always long and I dreaded doing them. I think for this one that I’ll have to stay focused, because that is key for me.
When Ballenger brought up the example of “Have teenage courtship rituals changed since the eighties and, if so, how have the changes influence relationships?” That’s a really good topic, because of course they have changed. The courtships from the sixties had changed by the eighties. I think that would’ve been an interesting topic to choose because of all the interesting reading materials I would’ve discovered.
Its tough writing a lot on this reading because I don’t have a ton of stuff to say about it. I’m over halfway to the requirement, but hopefully I’ll have more to say on the next response.
